When Yvonne returned home, it was already the afternoon. As soon as she stepped into the foyer, she saw her father sitting in the living room reading the newspaper.
A sinking feeling hit her - what was her father doing home at this time?
She thought about turning around and leaving, but it was too late. Chris, her father, had already spotted her. He rustled his newspaper, taking off his reading glasses that rested on the bridge of his nose , and asked, "Yvonne, why are you home at this time?"
Noticing that she was still wearing the outfit from yesterday, his brows furrowed in slight concern, "Did you not come home last night?"
Yvonne nodded guiltily. As she changed her shoes in the foyer, she calmed her nerves and told a small lie: "Yesterday...There was a challenging case, since I just got my law license, I took on some extra hours. This way, when the court session happens in a few days, I won't be flustered."
"Working hard is commendable, but you must take care of your health." Chris nodded in understanding.
Then, he paused and slid the newspaper towards Yvonne. "Are you aware of this?"
Yvonne took the newspaper, the bold headline causing her eyebrows to raise slightly.
"Female College Student Found Dead in Bloom Entertainment City Restroom, Suspected Drug Overdose."
"Dad, I wasn't aware of this. Has the police started their investigation?" After a quick glance, she set the newspaper down, "I heard that the incident with Bloom Entertainment is more complicated than it seems, could there be some behind-the-scenes mischief?"
Chris sipped his tea, "That's for the police to investigate. However, your older brother told me there's enough evidence to take Bloom Entertainment to court. Also, the victim's mother is adamant about filing a lawsuit."
Setting his teacup down, Chris made eye contact with Yvonne and said firmly, "Yvonne, I want you to take on this case."
Yvonne was taken aback, "Me?"
She was a novice lawyer who had just received her law license. Although she never doubted her abilities, if this case already had made it to the newspapers, then it was no doubt causing a city-wide sensation. Was her father trying to help her make a name for herself with this?
However, she didn't become a lawyer for the fame, but to help real victims...
Yvonne cautiously chose her words, not daring to bluntly admit that she didn't really want to take on this kind of case, so she could only beat around the bush, "Dad, I don't think I can... I'm afraid I may not be competent enough, after all, I am a newcomer..."
Chris had always held high expectations of her. Back in her university application days, she wanted to choose to specialize in art, but he had disagreed, saying that it was a waste of time, and he chose the profession of a lawyer for her.
"Why are not confident in yourself? I have great faith in you. You are my daughter. If you can top the exams, you can also win a lawsuit."
Chris paused, then continued, "And, this case is being handled by your elder brother. If you two siblings join forces, you certainly can bring the culprit to justice."
Seeing Chris's trust in her, Yvonne couldn't bring herself to refute him.
Well, after all, it was just another lawsuit, maybe she could take it as a way to hone her skills.
Later, when she got a chance, Yvonne dialed her eldest brother, Andrew's number. He picked up on the second ring and she could hear some noise in the background. She guessed that he was probably outside, working on a case.
"Yvonne?"
"Hey Andrew, it's me. Are you busy?"
"Yes, I'm on a case, is something up?"
Yvonne thought for a moment, then said, "When will you finish work tonight? I have something I'd like to discuss with you."
There was silence on the other end of the phone, it seemed like he was busy talking to someone else, after a while he responded. "I'm currently working on a big case, so I'm a bit busy. I'm not sure what time I will finish work tonight. How about this, I'll find you when I'm done?"
Yvonne hummed in agreement, "Then I'll leave you to continue with your work. Keep up the good work!"
She ended the call, then dialed Harry Lynch's number. Harry was her mentor who was a good teacher and helpful friend. Yvonne liked to hear his opinion on such issues. They spoke for a few minutes and he totally agreed, thinking it was a good idea for her to take on the case. Everyone knew that if she won this lawsuit, she might make a big name for herself in the industry!
Yvonne sat in an arm chair in the study as she put her phone away. She flipped through a few pages of the reference book, but couldn't focus. Her mind was in a mess, she didn't even know what she was thinking and felt a little restless.
At some point, what happened earlier came to her mind. Why was she thinking about him?
